An HP ProLiant DL585 G7 server or HP ProLiant BL685c G7 server blade configured with an AMD processor and 1TB (or more) of memory Enabled in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) is unable to boot to HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2014.02 (or earlier). When this occurs, the boot process is stopped at the following screen just prior to starting the SPP graphical interface in either interactive or automatic boot mode:

There is another advisory regarding AMD servers with over 1 TB of memory. Refer to the following Customer Advisory c03643361:

SCOPE

Any HP ProLiant DL585 G7 server or HP ProLiant BL685c G7 server blade configured with an AMD Processor and 1TB (or more) of memory enabled in the RBSU.

RESOLUTION

The issue described above has been resolved in HP Service Pack for ProLiant Version 2014.06 (and later):

Visit the following URL to obtain the latest version of HP Service Pack for ProLiant: http://www.hp.com/go/spp/download .

As a workaround, to boot to SPP 2014.02 (or earlier), perform one of the following:

  1. Create a bootable USB key from an SPP iso image.
  2. Edit the file usbmenu.cfg on the USB key adding "mem=2G" to both kernel append / boot parameter lines as follows:


  3. Boot to a USB key to run updates without any change needed to the RBSU settings.

OR

  1. Create a bootable USB key from an SPP iso image.
  2. Edit the file usbmenu.cfg on the USB key adding "amd_iommu=on" to both kernel append / boot parameter lines as follows:

    Note: Steps 3 through 8 are not required if the default ROM settings have not been changed.
  3. Reboot the server.
  4. Press F9 during POST to enter RBSU.
  5. Select Advanced Options.
  6. Select AMD-Vt.
  7. Choose Enable or confirm Enable is set.
  8. Press F10 to save and exit.
  9. Boot to USB key to run updates.

OR

  1. Reboot the server.
  2. Press F9 during POST to enter RBSU.
  3. Select Advanced Options.
  4. Select One Terabyte Memory Limit.
  5. Select Limit memory to below 1TB.
  6. Press F10 to save and exit.
  7. Boot to SPP DVD, SPP DVD iso via iLO, or boot to USB Key with SPP image.
  8. After updates complete, boot into RBSU and set One Terabyte Memory Limit back to default setting of Enable All Memory.
